Mariners Club, LLC
Mariners School

The Mariners Club is committed to the safety of our Members, Captains and their guests. For this reason, Mariners Club boats must be operated by a Designated Boat Captain (Captain) registered with the Club. In order to become a Captain, a candidate must successfully complete a boating safety course administered by the Club. The course will consist of a written portion that can be completed on-line and on the water training that should for most captains take less than two hours.
Mariners School – Written Instruction
For your convenience, we offer the written portion of Mariners school in three different media types: web based, Powerpoint CD or a printed manual. Upon successful completion of the coursework, candidates will be ready for on the water training.
Web Based School-
The State of Wisconsin offers an on-line Boater Safety and Education Program. This is the same program that you would be required to take if you were under the age of 18 and new to boating. The course is very comprehensive and will require approximately 6 hours of time to complete. The cost is $29.50, and is payable only upon completion of course and passing on-line assessment. The course may be viewed online at
http://www.boat-ed.com/Wisconsin/index.html The Mariners School recommends this course for those who may new to boating or for those who might want to continue boating in a larger class of boats in the future.
Powerpoint Presentation-
The Powerpoint presentation is a supplement to the online course. Topics covered include; boater safety, navigation, docking, emergency procedures, trouble-shooting and towing. Captains may take a copy of the Powerpoint home to use with their computer or if they wish they may use the club computer in the marina office. Upon completion, Captain's will be required to complete a brief assessment of the covered material. Time: 1-1.5 hours.
Notebook Style Manual-
The Mariners School Manual will be given to all captains. This is the same State of Wisconsin approved course as above, only in print version. Upon completion, Captains will be required to complete a brief assessment.
On the Water Instruction-
Once a Captain has completed one of the three above courses and successfully passed the brief assessment, he/she is now eligible for our On the Water portion of the Mariners School. This training will take place at your convenience, during a regularly scheduled reservation period. We will spend as much time with you as necessary to get each candidate comfortable operating Club boats and familiar with the Fish Creek harbor and adjacent waters of Green Bay. Most candidates that have prior experience should be able to complete the on the water portion during one reservation period. If either the captain candidate or the Club trainer believes additional training is necessary it will be scheduled at the candidates' convenience.
The trainer will cover specifics regarding the model of boats in the club as well as navigational procedures in and out of the marina. Also covered will be usage of the VHF radio, GPS procedures, and navigational hazards in the clubs boating area. Fuel used during the On the Water training will be provided by the club.
